William Kentridge

"The drawings don't start with 'a beautiful mark'. It has to be a mark of something out there in the world. It doesn't have to be an accurate drawing, but it has to stand for an observation, not something that is abstract, like an emotion." - William Kentridge

William Kentridge is a multi-platform artist from Johannesburg, South Africa. His work is heavily influenced by post-apartheid South Africa, drawing primarily with charcoal and creating vibrant interactive installation pieces.

Sample of his video work can be seen by clicking here , which contains the image above. Works like "Felix in Exile" further advertise Kentridge as a virtuoso, by showing his unique charcoal revision video method where he draws an image, captures it, erases and draws again and capturing again to create a narrative through stop motion.

As we see above in "The Refusal of Time" , Kentridge creates an installation piece that challenges and questions what time really means, what it really is, and ultimately what time looks like. This is meant to afford the viewer an interactive journey through introspection.
